Despite the wet and windy conditions, we had a great turnout for this hone game against Aretians.
The Browns were first up: James, Ethan Jones, George, Olivia Bromiley, Jack Fisher, Tyler, Ben, Lily, Zane Chick, Jacob
Both sides had early ball, with the Knights looking most comfortable. James made a great tackle and got his man into touch to win the ball for Kingswood. Ben made good ground from the restart, and Kingswood recycled the ball well, moving it wide right where Ben found space to run in try one. The next try was a great team effort. Ben and Lily hassled Aretians into an error to win the ball; Jacob, George and Jack F all did well moving Kingswood forward, and Tyler did well to cling on to a loose pass; Ethan J showed excellent movement, and was he that eventually stole over. Kingswood were pushing again before the end of the half, James with a super pass to Olivia to stormed forward and almost over, before the ball was moved left and then Jacob was nearly over, but the ref spotted an infringement and that was the last play. 2-0 the Knights.
Kingswood started on the front foot, Olivia bombing through the Aretians line. James then made further ground before Olivia was there to finish what she started. 3-0. The Knights were also diligent in defence, Lily and Jack working to win the ball. Olivia and Zane made good ground and got Kingswood back in the attacking half, and they were unlucky to see a pass go slightly forward. Ethan made a cracking tackle before the visitors registered their first score. Tyler made a massive run to get the Knights back on the offensive. Aretians were ever more solid in defence, but Kingswood were determined and patient, retaining the ball well in each tackle, and getting Olivia in striking distance. Aretians did well to hold her up and turn over possession, and a lightening quick counter saw them back in the game at 3-2. Kingswood built another attack from a vintage Bromiley drive, James stealing over. Zane C made a great effort to try and prevent the late Aretians consolation, but the game ended 4-3.
The Blues lined up for game 2: Will, Olly, Sadie-May, Jack W, Olivia T, Ryan Kelloway, Ryan Cox, Ethan Lee, Liam and Alfred.
The Knights quickly found themselves a try down, and the opposition with ball in hand, but Ethan and Ryan K put in some smashing tackles to jolt the ball from the visitor's hands, and Ethan stole away for the try. Olly then battled his way forward, not pretty but making excellent ground. Kingswood built and Jack W made a cracking pass to Ethan L, who was in again, 2-1. Ryan K had a taste for the tackle and was at the opposition again. this time it was Olly nabbing the loose ball, Sadie-May making the killer pass for Ryan K to capitalise, 3-1. The visitors got one back, before debutante Liam made a quality pass to set Sadie-May away and over. Will, Ryan K and Liam were solid in defence, Olivia T finally winning the ball back. Will almost took advantage, but was pushed out of play just short. 4-2 at half-time.
The first two tries of the half, run in by Ryan K and Liam, were absolute quality rugby. Kingswood were strong and aggressive taking the ball into the tackle, quick in to move the ball after contact, comfortable passing the ball and constantly positive, a superb team effort with every player involved. Aretians got one back before Olivia T and Ryan moved the ball for Ethan L to grab another. Liam, playing like he'd been part of this team for years made a great drive and presented expertly to Olly; Olly made an inch perfect pass into the path of a darting Ethan L, who would not be stopped. Another terrific try to wrap-up this game, 8-4 at the whistle.
Time allowed for a short five minutes per half game, the Browns playing the first half, Blues the second. Tyler and Ben nabbed the first two, before an Olivia storming run (tm) and a clever offload before she was tackled, saw James clear away. George and Ben put in good tackles to see the game 3-1 and half-time. Aretians grabbed one back after the restart, before Liam burst forward; the ball was recycled, Olivia T moved it wide and Liam was over. Kingswood pressured possession, and Alfred was over. Finally, Olly and Sadie-May were working until the end, pressuring the visitors into a panicked pass, with Liam on hand to capitalise. 6-2 at the end of proceedings.
The game ended 18-9, the winning margin fully reflecting an excellent performance.
One performance to be noted was Ryan K who was an absolute tackling machine today, but player of the day was Liam. Strong running with the ball in hand, great passing and tackling and receptive to coaching he had an excellent first game.
