It was a game that epitomised 2nd XV rugby at its best!

On a hot and glorious end of summers day in BS15, Kingswood 2’s welcomed BAC 2’s to Grimsbury Road for the first Bristol & District 3 league fixture of the season. With the visitors unable to bring a full compliment of players to the game, Kingswood provided the services of Richard Heard, Scott Howarth and James Dicks to the opposition in the 1st half in order that a competitive game of rugby could take place.

As both teams warmed up, it was suddenly apparent that there was no referee at the game. Panic set in on the side-line from the supporters, but then, in the distance, the crowd saw the Senior Director of Rugby, Stan Bailey (who was installing new floodlights at the time) climb back into his vehicle and head towards the top pitch. Bailey emerged from his truck in his mud-strewn and torn work clothes, armed with a whistle that barely worked, to inform the teams that he was taking charge of the game. With no yellow or red cards, a notebook or even a watch, Bailey blew ferociously on his whistle to emit a tiny peep, and the game was underway. With supporter, Steve Gaines, keeping time on an analogue watch, and Alan Bell and Club President, Rich Caines, keeping tally of the score, it appeared it was going to be a busy afternoon for the side-line, as Kingswood crossed the whitewash for 2 tries in the opening 5 minutes. Robbie Edwards and Adrian Hunter with the 2 quick scores, with Nick Bryant adding the extras.

BAC soon hit back, just before the quarter of an hour mark, when their Fly-Half broke clear and scored, then converted, to reduce the deficit to 7 points. However, Kingswood clawed back the 14 point lead 4 minutes later, when Robbie Edwards burst clear once again to add his 2nd of the match. Once again, Nick Bryant added the extras.

Another 5 minutes passed, and Kingswood were flying. Jason Carter the latest player to add his name to the scoresheet. Bryant was unable to make the difficult conversion, but Kingswood looked to have the game sewn up already. 26-7.

However, it wasn’t the final action of the short half, as BAC made a vital breakthrough with the final play, as No. 17 broke tackles to go in under the posts. BAC’s Fly-Half added the easy extras and referee Stan Bailey sounded a timid toot to end the half with a 26-14 lead for Kingswood.
With Kingswood seemingly in full control of the match, BAC turned the game on its head as they grabbed the next 3 tries in the game, ultimately giving them the lead for the first time in the game at 26-33. Despite the minor capitulation, Kingswood were still making chances, particularly from the 2 big men, Mike Oakley and Nate Walker, who were causing the BAC defence all sorts of problems.

Kingswood did manage to hit back soon after when Adrian Hunter went on a great run to go in under the posts. Whether it was the wait for the kicking tee or the pressure of drawing level, Nick Bryant was unable to add the additional points, so BAC held on to a slender 2 point lead 31-33.

With the sun-dial intimating that there were only a few minutes of the game remaining, Jason Carter stole the show, and the win for Kingswood, as he grabbed his 2nd and 3rd tries just minutes apart with 2 fantastic breaks to give Kingswood a slightly flattering score-line win of 41-33.

A fantastic game of rugby for the supporters to enjoy and one that really epitomised 2nd XV rugby. Plenty to work on a training this week, so we hope to see all of the 2nd XV there!
