Kingswood went into this fixture knowing there was a lot to put right from the previous week. After some honest conversations and a week of real graft at training, everyone was ready to put on the blue and brown jersey on Saturday.
Kingswood received the kick-off playing up the slope for the first half. The first 10 minutes of the game were spent trying to figure out each other’s game plan. Unfortunately, BAC were first to put points on the board with a try in the corner. Kingswood knew they had to respond to this to keep themselves in the game. After multiple phases with the forwards, Mark Oakley, Ben Limmer, James Taylor, Dan Cox and Charlie Robbins all making hard yards, we scored a try of our own. The ball was spun out to the backs by scrum half Sam Coe, fly half Chris Finn dummy switched with centre Ian Kirley and outside centre Harri Richards ran a brilliant line sucking in the BAC 12 and 13. The ball was passed behind Harri to fullback Harvie Lapham who drew his man and passed to winger Chris Wyn, who also drew his man to release Rich Wood into space and to score in the corner. A very well worked team try. BAC 7 Kingswood 5
BAC replied to this with another try in the corner. However, they began to lose their discipline and Kingswood were rewarded with a few penalties. With Head Coach, Neil Ward, managing our game plan well, we began to gain territory, moving deeper and deeper into the BAC half. From a resulting penalty, Kingswood kicked to the corner and had a lineout on the BAC 22m line. Vice-captain and forwards leader, Sam Maddison, called for a driving maul. Hooker Mike Gibbs hit his target and with forwards Alex Burnett, Luke Williams & Mark McGarrigle joining the remaining forwards, Kingswood began a driving maul towards the BAC line. Fly half Chris Finn joined the back of the maul and, out of nowhere, found a gap through the middle and ran in to score.
Half time score: BAC 12 Kingswood 10
Kingswood kicked off going down the slope and kept BAC pinned back in their 22. Some more ill-discipline from the hosts provided Kingswood with an early penalty in front of the posts. Captain Chris Finn duly added the 3 points. Finally, Kingswood took the lead. BAC 12 Kingswood 13
For the next 20 minutes, play remained between both 22m lines. Some heroic defending, Sam Brake leading the way with tackles, smart phase play and some fantastic running and offloading showed the style of rugby Kingswood can actually play.
Unfortunately, BAC were able to move up the gears and finish off the game. Their fitness, our fatigue and decision making were the difference in the last 20 minutes. Three tries from the hosts put them into a comfortable lead and secured the game for them. We look forward to welcoming them to Kingswood later in the season.
Final score BAC 32 Kingswood 13.
A massive improvement with our defence, attacking options and discipline from the previous week but by no means the finished article. Lots of positives to take away from today’s game and things to work on in training.
