It matters not who won or lost, but how we played the game

Match Report By Neil Ward

With an amazing 30 players available for this fixture, Kingswood went into the game knowing a big improvement was required from the Quins game just 2 weeks prior.

Kingswood hit the ground running, dominating scrum and set piece and even when Barbs had Kingswood under pressure in their 22, you could see a well-orchestrated exit and a ruthlessness in the ruck.

The Big K’s Pack regained ball after ball, and centres Craig Williams and Rich Shacklock, with the help of starting Fly-Half, Chris Finn, were rampant as they crashed through Barbs defenders gaining valuable ground, and it was through this and the dominating scrum that Chris Finn went over for Kingswood’s first try, which he duly converted. Kingswood didn’t stop there as they reset and went to work again, finishing the half with Chris Finn adding 2 more tries and conversions to finish the half 21-0 up.

Sam Coe, who had an excellent 40 minutes, made way for with Mike Iles at the break and it was Kingswood who started the 2nd half the stronger. Charlie Robbins chopping down any attacker and ripping ball for fun allowed for quick turn over and Chris Lewis to run 50m down his wing, dodging 3 defenders to score. Chris Finn hit the post from out wide with the conversion attempt.

Further changes were introduced and Kingswood continued to pile on pressure, unfortunately this led to Barbarians unable to field their front row and uncontested scrums soon followed. This favoured the Barbs No.8, who had made good yards throughout the game and it was Barbarians turn to score. More changes and some poor discipline from both sides meant the game started becoming scrappy and it was Barbarians who took advantage.

Towards the end of the 2nd half, Kingswood went 31-27 up when Craig Williams went crashing through the opposition, bouncing tackles and using his quick feet, only to offload to James Dicks who finished the try off in good fashion. Sadly, for Kingswood Barbarians were not finished and clinched the final try of the game. The Kingswood side-line had the score as a 31-32 defeat, but the referee had it down as a 36-32 victory for Kingswood. As the referee is always right, we went for the latter. However, the scoreline matters not, as this was another excellent Big K display, gearing up nicely for the official start of the 2019/20 season with a 1st and 2nd XV double-header against Aretians next Saturday.

Man of the match went to Charlie Robbins and Harvie Lapham.
