It was quite a drive to our Winscombe fixture on Sunday with the weather looking bright we were hopeful of a dry and, not too cold, afternoon. Kingswood were a few players light but had enough to enable the game to go ahead. The match was played over 4 quarters of 10 minutes each. Kingswood didn’t have any subs so every girl had to play the whole game. Maizie Davis was captain.
The match started with both sides looking equally matched, some great tackles were put in by all of the girls when they were defending and there was some confident and precise passing along the line enabling Kingswood to make plenty of ground when in possession of the ball. Some great tackling by Gracie Veitch, Maizie Davis and Tia Witcombe (as sweeper), helped to keep the scores even. A quick break through run by Paige Woodward gained some much needed ground. Charlotte Marsden also had some good runs along the wing, managing to break free of several tackles. Chloe Reilly had some strong runs and also offered great support when attacking. Amy Hodge played well on the wing, defending well with some great tackles and also making ground when in possession of the ball.
Three out of the four quarters were fairly level in scores but Winscombe managed to gain a sizable lead in the second quarter putting them ahead and Kingswood unable to recover and close the gap in score. Unfortunately, a couple of dropped balls over the tryline were missed tries that could have closed the gap, and also a couple of loopy passes enabled Winscombe to steal possession and take advantage to score tries.
Overall Kingswood played well even as the weather grew colder making it hard to handle the ball. Apart from the second quarter, the tries scored were evenly matched throughout the game with Kingswood fighting to claw back some points and close down the Winscombe lead. All of the girls played brilliantly, tackling well and showing some great ball handling skills.
