A battle within

It was advantage Saxons this week before the match had even started, as their opponents, Bath Saracens Zeta, turned up with no women. Given the option of being granted penalty points or playing against a team of just 4 men, Saxons chose to play. The decision looked like it was the wrong one to start, as Kingswood (with a two player advantage) spent the first 5 minutes defending heavily. Numbers finally told though, as kingswood got a point on the board, just as new Saracens players turned up, giving them their full complement of players. This seemed to have an opposite effect however. Saxons turned up the pressure, and quickly crossed 3 further times making the half time score 4-0. The game was won quickly in the second half with further tries from Bex Mclaughlin and Mariko Broome. Focus switched from winning the game to a wish to keep a clean sheet, with some hard work in defence keeping the opposition just short of try line. A battle within a battle also emerged as the two leading contenders for top try scorer did their best to gain an advantage, as the shooter sounded for full time, it looked like Callum Yeoman would edge out Joe Needs by a single try, but a last gasp break from Chris Broome and a simple pass to the supporting Joe gave him the final score of the game, and ensured that the two finished the game with 3 tries each. A well earned win overall from the team, with the bonus of being the first team in the league to keep a clean sheet! Man of the match went to Callum for his all round performance, with the wooden spoon going to Bex Mclaughlin for confusing the 5 metre line for the try line.
