Kingswood V Westbury on Severn
Kingswood's mid season game was against Westbury On Severn, a win would
ensure Kingswood 2nd place at the half way stage and give them and
excellent chance at securing promotion at the end of the season.
It took Kingswood only 10 minutes to get on the score sheet. Ian Kirley
was released up the wing but driven into touch 5m from the Westbury
tryline. Westbury took the lineout but Kingswood competed well and
neither team could secure the ball. Damien Crosswell was first to
react to the loose ball and gathered the bouncing ball and powered over
the line. Ian Kirley's conversion seemed impossible but it swerved
and struck the crossbar and fell the right side. 7-0
4 minutes later and Westbury were again under pressure but managed to
pump the ball up field, however it was skilfully caught by Paul
Bennett who went on a powerful run, gaining excellent ground.
Kingswood recycled the ball well for several phases before a quick
passing move found Liam Stinchcombe on the wing who went over to score
his first try for Kingswood. 12-0
3 minutes later and Kingswood were again putting Westbury under
pressure, a powerful Kingswood scrum turned over a Westbury put-in and a
rolling maul was eventually formed. Paul Allen and Dean Stephens
were impressive in the build up and eventually the ball was sent out to
Paul Bennett who broke through the Westbury defence and grabbed
Kingswood's 3rd try in 7 minutes. Ian Kirley converted and the
score was 19-0
Westbury then started the fight their way back and were close to
crossing the Kingswood whitewash but Kingswood defended well, Westbury
did however get a penalty on the half hour mark which No. 10 converted
and the score was now 19-3
There was time for one more Kingswood try before half time when they
yet again put Westbury under pressure. Westbury were awarded a scrum on their
own 5m line, but an impressive scrum from Kingswood not only saw it get
turned over but the Westbury pack were driven back into their own try
zone and Ben Phillips dropped on the ball to give Kingswood a 24 - 3
lead at half time.
Half Time: Kingswood 24 - 3 Westbury on Severn
2 minutes into the second half and Westbury kicked the ball into touch
and Kingswood setup a rolling maul from the resulting lineout.
Kingswood made excellent ground before the ball made its way to Paul
Bennett who drew in the last front row player before passing the ball
out to Ian Kirley who gave his opposing winger the slip and went
over to give Kingswood a great start to the 2nd half. 29 - 3
4 minutes later and Kingswood were still dominating the game. A
penalty was awarded and Mark McGarrigle took the tap and made great
ground through a solo run. The ball was spread wide again through
some impressive passing before Jon Bogan brilliantly caught a low pass
and ran over for Kingswood's 6th try of the game. 34-3
Westbury then got back into the game and put Kingswood under pressure
but Kingswood again defended well and the next 15 minutes were played
out in the centre of the park in an evenly contested game.
On 66 minutes Mike Oakley managed to break free and it seemed like he
was going to grab his 6th try in 5 weeks but amazingly he was caught by
the Westbury fullback just 5m out but managed to pop the ball back to an
advancing Jon Bogan who was amazingly tackled on the line and it seemed
like the chance had gone, however, Kingswood were awarded a penalty and a
quick tap was sent out to Steve Trevelyan who ran over for Kingswood 7th
try. Ian Kirley converted and the score was now 41-3
Dave Vince then came on for Liam Stinchcombe and Matthew Davis later replaced Mark Oakley.
Kingswood should have been over again but sloppy handling meant the
chance was wasted. Westbury had the last action of the game but
Kingswood remained firm and for the 2nd week in a row finished a game
without conceding a try.
