League Match
Kingswood Vs Tredworth
After their week off last Saturday, Kingswood were
thrown back into league action against Tredworth. The two teams
haven't met since the opening game of the season when Kingswood took the
points in a very close scoring match.
There was only 2 minutes on the clock when the game
saw its first points. Tredworth were awarded a scrum but a solid
Kingswood drive saw the ball arrive on their side. Dave Vince
released the backs and there was some quick passing before Dean Stephens
kicked the ball through into the Tredworth penalty area. Tredworth
attempted the clearance but the ball ran loose and the whole sideline
went wild as Alex Green dropped on the ball to grab his first ever try
for Kingswood in 4 years of trying. 5-0
5 minutes later and again Tredworth were awarded a
scrum but this time Kingswood's pack wheeled it around and earned
themselves the put-in. Kingswood secured the ball and the backs
were released again and this time Dean Stephens slipped through the
Tredworth line and placed the ball down rather dramatically right under
the posts. Ian Kirley added the two points. 12-0
Despite Kingswood dominating play, it wasn't until the
20th minute that they grabbed another try. It was a classic
Kingswood try, a penalty was awarded for offside from which a lineout
was secured and a solid Kingswood rolling maul powered towards the
Tredworth tryline and Mark Oakley got the ball down in the corner.
17-0
9 minutes later and Ian Kirley went on the offensive
up the wing but was tackled into touch just metres from the tryline.
Tredworth secured the lineout and No. 9 cleared their lines from the
boot, however the kick was once again secured by Ian Kirley who this
time started a run in field. Kingswood moved the ball well through the
hands before it eventually fell to Jon Bogan who powered through a
tackle to just get the ball down over the line. 22-0
Straight from the restart Mike Oakley secured the
catch and Neil Ward was close by in support as the pair combined well to
setup a strong rolling maul. Dave Vince removed the ball from the back
and popped it inside to Mark McGarrigle who broke through a gap in the
Tredworth line and made great ground up the wing before passing the ball
to the supporting Liam Stinchcombe, who's great one handed catch saw him
have a clear run in under the posts. Ian Kirley added the two
points. 29-0
4 minutes later and Kingswood were in cruise control
with excellent rucking and mauling on display. Paul Bennett caught
a high kick and set off up field, breaking several tackles before being
brought down. The ruck was secured and Dave Vince sent the ball
inside to Dean Stephens who then sent a crash ball pass to an advancing
Mike Oakley who smashed through an attempted tackle to secure himself an
easy run in. Ian Kirley added the two points. 36-0
The end of the half was approaching but Kingswood
still had one more try in them. Tredworth setup a rolling maul but
Mark McGarrigle got involved and made a nuisance of himself and
Kingswood eventually managed to secure the ball. The ball was
released quickly and again Kingswood put together a lovely flowing move
which ended with Rich Francis getting the ball down over the line
despite several Tredworth bodies attached to him. Ian Kirley added
the two points from a difficult kick which swerved nicely between the
uprights. 43-0
Half Time: Kingswood 43 - 0 Tredworth
At half time an injured Liam Stinchcombe was replaced by Ben Lambert.
There was a Tredworth fight back at the start of the 2nd half as
Kingswood were placed under sustained pressure in their 22.
Tredworth were awarded a series of penalties and Kingswood were reduced
to 13 men as Damien Crosswell and Mark McGarrigle were sent to the bin
for 10 minutes for 2 different offences. Despite being two men
down, Kingswood defended excellently against waves of Tredworth tap
penalties and finally cleared their lines.
On 59 minutes, Tredworth were awarded a scrum in their own half and
Kingswood competed well which caused a rushed pass from Tredworth's
Scrum Half. The ball suddenly appeared loose on the floor and Stan
Bailey dropped on the ball to secure possession for Kingswood. Rob
Lamb got to the ruck first and popped the ball up to Mike Oakley who
again broke through several attempted tackles to finish under the posts.
Ian Kirley grabbed his 5th conversion, adding the two points. 50-0
Now back to full strength, Kingswood took control of the
game once again. On 66 minutes they secured a beautifully worked
lineout and their rolling maul once again made ground up the pitch
before Mike Oakley broke from the back up the blind side to grab himself
a hat-trick. 55-0
Matthew Davies then came on, replacing Mark Oakley.
There was then an incredible restart to the game. Tredworth's kick
off was clearly not going to go 10m but despite cries of "leave it
Special" from Coach Rich Knight, Matt Davies caught the ball
and powered up the pitch on his own, breaking several
tackles and incredibly grabbing himself a try within 8 seconds of
being on the pitch. 60-0
Neil Ward was then replaced by Dan Nicholls
On 77 minutes Kingswood secured a lineout via a penalty and another
rolling maul was formed before a long pass was sent in field where Paul
Bennett was on hand to secure the catch and power over to grab his first
try and Kingswood's 11th try of the game. Kirley added the two points.
67-0
Right on the stroke of full time, Kingswood secured a lineout in their
own half and the ball made it to the backs and eventually it was sent wide to
Ian Kirley who ran most of the pitch up the wing before popping the ball
inside to Mark McGarrigle who had an easy run in over the Tredworth
tryline and Kirley added the two extra points from his 7th successful
conversion. 74-0
The referee brought the game to an end and Kingswood had secured their
biggest league win of the season to keep promotion chances alive for
another week.
