League Match

Tredworth V Kingswood

Kingswood's first league game of the season saw an away journey to Tredworth in Gloucester.

Kingswood needed to start the season off with a win but things did not get off to a good start when Ian Kirley was carried off after only 3 minutes when he suffered a bang to the head and was knocked unconscious.

It was clear from the opening tackles that both teams were out for a win and were relishing being back on the field.  Tredworth made a strong start to the game and had a good spell of early possession and should have took the lead from a penalty but No. 15 failed to convert.

Kingswood then started to get into the game and a hard fought battle in the middle of the park ensued.

Tredworth were then reduced to 14 men when their No. 5 was sent off for a deliberate head butt.

Kingswood started to control the game and were putting in some good runs, most notably from Mark McGarrigle and Sam Massey and looked the most likely to grab the first try.  This was the case when on the stroke of half time, Sam Massey put in another strong run that led to a quick passing move before Tredworth were penalised for a deliberate knock-on.  Stan Bailey quickly tapped the ball and sent out a pass to Steve Trevelyan who dived over the line to give Kingswood the lead.

Half Time: Tredworth 0 - 5 Kingswood

With 10 minutes played of the 2nd half Tredworth grabbed an equaliser when Kingswood tried wheeling the scrum but this helped Tredworth to find space on the far left before No. 11 went over to grab the equaliser.  The conversion was also missed and the scores were level at 5-5.

The scores were level for just over 5 minutes before Kingswood turned over a Tredworth scrum and Mark McGarrigle picked up the ball from the back and went on a run before being tackled not far from the Tredworth try line.  Ben Phillips picked the ball from the resulting ruck and passed the ball out to Dean Stephens who then sent a pass out to Sam Massey who crashed over the line to restore Kingswood's lead.  Dean Stephens converted and Kingswood had  5-12 lead.

Kingswood were now starting to get good spells of possession and were taking hold of the game.  Matthew Perriman, who had another great tackling display, was then replaced by Matthew Davis.

Kingswood could have increased their lead late on when they were awarded a penalty after a late tackle on Ben Phillips however Dean Stephens just missed the uprights.

James Dicks came on for Rob Lamb towards the end of the match but the game was evenly contested and Kingswood held out to grab their first win of the new season after their return to Gloucester 2.
