Match Report
Kingswood 2nd XV
Friendly Match
Bristol Telephones Vs Kingswood
A rare opportunity for me to follow the 2nd XV this
week on their away trip to Bristol Telephones. A fixture that is always
full of incident, it promised to be an entertaining game.
Kingswood made a great start to the match and twice
made it to within feet of the Telephones try-line but they were unable
to capitalise on their early pressure. Telephones then started to
have more possession and were soon pressurising the Kingswood defence.
Kingswood defended well for several phases but were
finally undone on 13 minutes when Telephones secured a lineout and a
rolling maul crashed over the Kingswood try-line. 5-0
It was then Kingswood's turn to attack, on 23 minutes
after several phases of play, a rolling maul formed in the Telephones
half. Good ground was made before Neil Ward broke from the back
with the ball and used his hand off to great effect through some
attempted tackles before eventually being halted. Fortunately for
Kingswood, James Dicks was on hand to receive the pop pass and he made
it over the line after a strong run-in, much to Dicks' obviously
delight. 5-5
Straight from the restart, James Dicks was involved
again when he caught the kick and went on another strong run before
being brought to the ground, a ruck formed and Tim Brain sent the ball
to the backs. It was then that Cousin Brad showed his impressive
turn of pace for the first time in the game as he slalomed through the
Bristol Telephones team on an impressive solo run and grabbed himself an
excellent try. 5-10
The temperature on the pitch then began to rise, with
one or two incidents requiring the referee's attention, as a result the
game lost it's edge and the ball remained in the middle of the field for
the remainder of the first half.
Half Time: Bristol Telephones 5 - 10 Kingswood
From the restart it was fair to say that Kingswood were placed under
sustained pressure but their defence was holding up well, resisting
several Telephones rolling mauls. Kingswood's defence did however
eventually yield to the pressure on 56 minutes when Telephones were
awarded a penalty from which the secured the lineout and put together
several phases of play before No. 7 broke with the ball and skipped
through a few challenges to drop over the line. 10-10
Andy Leibow then made way for newcomer Rob Edwards.
Telephones still had relative control of the game and Kingswood were
soon forced into another substitution when Bram came off injured and
Andy Leibow made a return to the game.
There was then a sin binning for both teams when Kingswood's Dave Vince
and Telephones No. 14 were sent from the field after a minor
altercation.
Kingswood's defence was then breached again when on 73 minutes they
conceded a penalty just 5m from their try-line and a quick tap penalty
was sent out to No. 20 who dived over in the corner. 15-10
There was then a chance for a Kingswood equaliser when new boy Rob
Edwards chased a downfield kick with blistering pace and an even better
tackle on the Telephones full back, and although it seemed as though the
Telephones full-back was not releasing the ball, Edwards was penalised
for not rolling away and Kingswood were cruelly penalised.
Despite Kingswood holding the lead at half time, they were unable to
find that 3rd try in the 2nd half to make the game safer and sadly came
away with nothing. But nonetheless a great game of rugby both sets of supporters to enjoy, and that we did.
