Despite controlling the majority of possession throughout this match, Kingswood slumped to their first defeat of 2014.
In a closely contested, and highly entertaining first half, it was Old Richians who drew first blood with a penalty from the boot of their Scrum Half. Kingswood levelled up the scores soon after however, when Conor Lambert slotted home a penalty. 3-3.
It was Richians that went in at half time on the front foot though, thanks to another penalty kick from their Scrum Half.
Half time: Kingswood 3 – 6 Old Richians
In the 2nd Half, it was Kingswood who grabbed the first try of the match when they were awarded a penalty right in front the posts. Rather than opting to level the scores, a quick thinking Andy Watts quick tapped the penalty and pirouetted over the line. Conor Lambert added the simple extras and Kingswood held a 4 point lead. 10-6.
Despite Kingswood's solid defence, a big issue for them was Old Richians ability to knock over a penalty kick from all over the park. A couple of penalties from their Scrum Half later, and Kingswood trailed once more. 10-12.
Despite all their possession in attack, Kingswood were unable to penetrate the Richians defence again. Conor Lambert did have an opportunity to recapture the lead for the home-side, however his kick cruelly struck the post and the danger was cleared.
With little under 8 minutes remaining, Kingswood's fate was sealed when Fly Half Conor Lambert sent a clearance kick downfield which was gathered by the Richians Full-Back. Kingswood's defence had more gaps than Oxford Street and the Full-Back was allowed to slalom his way into the Kingswood 22, before offloading to a team-mate for an easy try under the posts. An simple conversion made the score 10-19 with very little time to reply.
This was how the game finished and Kingswood were left deflated by the result, knowing that a bit more composure when it mattered, could have saw a comfortable victory.
It's not all doom and gloom however, with a few big names coming back off the injury list and some January signings coming in, Kingswood are geared up to have all the tools required for a positive 2nd half of the season.
Final Score: Kingswood 10-19 Old Richians
