The Big K stick to winning ways

Following the team effort against Tredworth the week before everyone was in high spirits leading up to the Westbury game. The team pretty much remained the same, however, Mark McGarrigle was welcomed back at 8 and Dave Thomlin filled in at 2nd row in lieu of Stan. Dean stayed on as captain with Wardy still missing, although hoping to be back soon with a run out for the 3's.

From kick-off Kingswood started well and, when a simple set of hands stretched the defense wide, leaving enough room for Liam to step his winger and go over in the corner we were in a confident mood.

What then happened was quite a scrappy affair through a combination of hands (or lack of) from both teams and some consistently inconsistent decisions from the ref the game slowed down somewhat. Whenever the Big K did get the ball a simple fumble or giving away a lacklustre penalty gave the ball back to Westbury, who were only really in it with a combination of Kingswood foul ups and ref decisions.

The next score game from an unlikely play in which Muttley who, after a series of hands from backs and forwards alike, crossed the line when there was a debate-able forward pass/knock-on that the ref didn't see, Westbury claim to have seen and stopped play all whilst Kingswood kept playing.

The two final actions of the half saw Paul Allen slot a drop goal after some phase play in the Westbury 22 (Westbury very kindly informed the ref it had indeed gone over) and Nick Coe got sin-binned for a dangerous tackle.

Half time - 13-0 to the Big K

No changes at half time but some words from the the coach gave Kingswood the edge and saw Dave Thomlin cross after Ben Phillips stole the Westbury ball at the back of their scrum, offloaded to Ben lambert who took the contact, drawing enough men in for Phillips to pop to Dave 5m out - and no-ones going to stop him from 5m. Phillips converted.

Rob Lamb then came on for Dave Vince, whilst Nick Coe returned from the sin bin. The next score came shortly after with Mark McGarrigle stealing the Westbury ball from a line-out and drew the men for Dean Stephens to take an inside ball and run over the line. Phillips converted gain (surprisingly he's getting better).

Westbury seemed to pick themselves up a bit and after some stout defense from Kingswood - notably Ben Lambert who threw himself at everything and a thunderous tackle from Damien Crosswell - Paul Allen broke away with the ball in the Kingswood half. As he drew two he threw an overhead pass to Liam on the wing, who went outside two of the Westbury players to score in the corner again.

Gareth Pond and Steven Ridgeway came on for Ben Lambert and Ben Phillips with 15mins remaining.

Unbelievably we then saw the Westbury Hooker throw a deliberate knock-on to ruin a Kingswood attack, which the ref was oblivious to, and so he duly scooped up the ball and ran in for Westburys only score under the posts - however - I will say if doesn't see it it didn't happen - maybe his shades got in the way?

The final score came from James Wilmott who had been lurking at 15 all game. Gareth Pond took the ball up the middle and a simple pop pass to James saw him out pace the defenders to the line. The game was then brought to a halt five minutes from the end when whilst attacking in the Westbury 10m line replacement Ridgeway broke his leg under a pile of bodies. With an ambulance en route the ref finished the game early.

Final score 37 - 7 to the Big K
