Kingswood Finish 2012 With Bonus Point Defeat

Kingswood used their last league game of the season to treat the on looking crowd to a spectacular fixture against promotion chasing Dursley.

Despite the final score line, incredibly, the score stood at a lowly 5-3 at half time, thanks to an early try from Kingswood Prop, Mike Oakley and a penalty from Dursley’s Fly Half.

Dursley knew that if they were to have a chance at securing promotion, then they would need a bonus point win at the Big K and so started the 2nd half in a ferocious manner, unfortunately, Kingswood scuppered those plans early in the 2nd half when Full Back, Joe Jones-Griffiths, collected a seemingly harmless pass in Kingswood’s 22 before blasting his way through the Dursley defence and into their half. Quick hands then led to Lewis Voisey making his way into the opposition 22 and a couple of rucks later, veteran Forward Stan Bailey, crashed over the line in the corner. 10-6

With Prop Mike Flook causing his opposite number real damage in the scrums, lifting him entirely off the floor in most of them, Kingswood then started to dominate at the set pieces. Just minutes after the last try, a powerful Kingswood scrum turned over Dursley’s possession and a Ben Phillips downfield kick was collected by Dean Stephens who offloaded out to Sam Coe, who crashed over in the corner to make the score 15-6.

Then the game changed dramatically. With Kingswood seemingly out of favour with the referee and their fitness flagging, they then spent the next 20 minutes on the back foot, barely seeing the ball at all. In that time, Dursley managed to grab a couple of penalties and 3 tries to take the score to 15-30.

When Kingswood finally got some possession, they too returned to racking up the points when Dean Stephens chased his own grubber kick into the try zone before dropping on the ball to bring the score to 20-30.

Right at the end of the match however, Dursley grabbed their all important 4th try, to steal a bonus point victory. They now have an agonising wait to discover if they have secured promotion.
