A try in each half from Prop Mike Oakley, plus a Ben Phillips penalty, was enough to give Kingswood the victory in a fixture that struggled to get going.
Ben Phillips gave Kingswood an early lead before Mike Oakley ran over in the corner after a progressive Kingswood attack. Hucclecote pulled 3 points back near half time and the score was 8-3 at the turnaround.
Hucclecote then narrowed the difference to just 2 points with another penalty, before a nice rolling maul from a lineout saw Mike Oakley break over the line for his 2nd try of the game.
Hucclecote then came close to scoring when a hopeful kick downfield was chased hard by their winger and Kingswood Centre, Joe Jones-Griffiths. Both players arrived at the ball, a few inches short of the try line, but Jones-Griffiths tackled the winger who was eventually penalised for holding on.
The game then took a sour note after a scuffle broke out on the pitch. Hucclecote, who had already been reduced to 14 men earlier in the 2nd half, then had another player sin-bined and another red carded after the fracas. There was even a removal from the sideline of one of their fans. For Kingswood’s part, the referee deemed a yellow card was enough for Dean Stephens.
This was the final nail in the coffin for this game. Hucclecote managed to pull another 3 points back near the end, but the game offered no real sparks of excitement.
A wins a win though and with it Kingswood leapfrogged Ashley Down in the league.
Next week could prove to be the most crucial match of Kingswood’s season as they host Spartans who sit in the relegation zone. Victory for Kingswood will put even more daylight between them and the dreaded drop.
Final Score: Kingswood 13 – 9 Hucclecote
