The ever reliable Mike Flook was still available however and was joined in the front row by Matthew Phillips and a first appearance of the season for Matt Hay. Kingswood even welcomed back Steve Trevelyan, who also took to the field for the first time this season when he accepted our cries for help to play at No. 8.
Despite losing an injured Paul Allen in the Centre, Kingswood’s Backs lined up strong.
The problem for Kingswood was not that they couldn’t compete, it was more the belief that they couldn’t. Losing 3 of the pack was detrimental to the belief on its own, but during the first half, Kingswood also lost Lee Hancock at Flanker and then Captain Ben Phillips at No. 9. By this point, Kingswood found themselves 24-0 down going into halftime.
Annoyingly, despite Brockworth deserving the win, they were not without their faults and when Kingswood finally realised they could actually compete in this game, it was too little, too late.
With 10 minutes remaining, Kingswood finally started to run at gaps and recycle the ball quickly and getting the Backs involved. Within a few minutes, Prop Mike Flook crashed over in the corner to pull a try back. Kingswood continued in the same vein and came mightily close to a 2nd a few minutes later, but knocked on agonisingly close to line.
Final Score: Brockworth 41 - 5 Kingswood
A big thanks to Brockworth for their hospitality and being gracious in victory, it was by far the nicest away trip to the region for some years. Oh, and a big thank you to whoever snuffed my lift home just as we left, scariest journey home ever.
