After last week’s shock defeat to Ashley Down (and it was a shock, despite the abuse I received on Facebook from opposition members) Kingswood put their promotion campaign back on track as they comfortably saw off visiting Westbury On Severn with another 7 try victory.
With the 2015/16 league campaign starting with an important win over Old Colstonians and then a mauling of Aretians, Kingswood were probably guilty of believing the rest of the season would be a doddle as they faced off against Ashley Down. As a result, their performance was well below average and they found themselves on the end of a hiding.
It was clearly the kick up the backside that Kingswood needed, and after Head Coach Mike Jones laid last week to rest at the pre-match team meeting, the squad got straight back on the horse to play their game in hand over visiting Westbury.
Video highlights of the match are below, so I won’t bore you with a full breakdown of the game, but one pleasing aspect was the marked improvement of the Kingswood lineout, thanks in part to a special training session taken by former Bristol and Newcastle Flanker, Redford Pennycook.
The session clearly had the right impact, as 4 of the home side’s 7 try haul started, or come directly from, the lineout, which is in direct contrast from other games this season. It’s hugely positive news for Kingswood, because having their powerful maul back in their arsenal is only going to increase the number of try scoring chances in future matches, for both Forwards and Backs.
