Kingswood have had a bit of luck recently when it comes to injuries (Dave Tomlin and Ian Kirley aside) and this has no doubt helped them reach the dizzy heights of 5th place in Gloucester 1, however, this week saw a terrible bit of bad luck for the Big K. A tricky away trip to Hucclecote was spoilt with injuries to Dave Vince, Ben Phillips, Steve Ridgway and Gareth Pond. The injuries meant there was a call up for Mike Iles at Scrum Half and James Willmott moved into the Centre.
Kingswood received the kick off at the start of what would later turn out to be one of the dullest games of rugby I’ve had the misfortune to watch in recent years. This was not the fault of the two teams, any team would find it difficult to play when the game is not allowed to go past a 2nd phase. There were 4 times as many scrums than points in this game and I can count on one hand the number of times either side put a flowing move together.
Some highlights of the game include our Outside Centre being spoken to by the referee for telling our No. 8 to pick and go if the scrum started wheeling (how dare he!) and our pack being told to “Use it, use it” whenever they started a rolling maul.
Hucclecote took the lead early on but Kingswood dominated the remainder of the game and an equaliser came from Paul Allen just before half-time.
Hucclecote’s winner came from a penalty kick in the 2nd half when Kingswood were marched back, not once, but twice (no one knows why) after Nick Coe was penalised for coming in at the side of our own ruck.
Anyway, a bonus point at least meant that Kingswood came away from the game with something, cuz there certainly isn’t any exciting footage.
(These are my views and not necessarily the views of Kingswood RFC)
