With several of the pack rested, Matt Phillips showed what you can achieve with hard work and training when he was given a starting position at Hooker.
Coach Dan Montagu’s plan was clear, it was a friendly match so every penalty was to be kicked or ran and we were to use the match to try people in new positions, however, BAC, bless em, do take a fixture against Kingswood very seriously and the away team found themselves sucked into a point scoring battle where on a couple of occasions Kingswood ignored the request of the coach and went for the posts.
Kingswood did have a strong backline out on the field, but with the ridiculously narrow pitch, Kingswood struggled to adapt their strong backs moves in such a confined space and as a result, couldn’t find many gaps in the home teams defence.
Kingswood controlled the majority of the possession, but as frustration grew with the conditions and a certain someone, Kingswood were reduced to 14 men.
Ironically, it must have been that extra space on the pitch that finally lead to Kingswood taking the lead in the game, when they finally picked up the intensity and Ben Phillips found a gap in the defence to slip over for an easy try.
BAC then added another penalty to take the lead once again, before they slipped over right on the final whistle for a try of their own and a 7-14 victory.
A terrible game in all fairness for the onlookers, but it did give Kingswood the chance to try a few things and it gave the home team the chance to have an oggy. How cute.
Back to matches that do matter this week though as Kingswood have a crucial home game against Bream who sit one place above them in the Gloucester 1 league table. No experiments, just a big W needed.
Video of Bens try and a huuuuge bosh by Ashley Honeywell will be on later on this week.
