Kingswood end the season on a high

Kingswood welcomed Whitehall 2nds to their ground after their original league game fixture against Cheltenham Saracens cancelled. Although this awarded the Big K with the two points it does not affect their league standings and they finish 3rd in the Gloucs 2 League.

It was Sponsers Day down the club and with Kingswood still fielding a strong side from the league game cancellation, and the two coaches watching from the sideline, they were looking to impress against what looked like a big Whitehall team.

The game started as any other would and the opening exchanges were quite equally matched. It took up until the 16th minute for a score. A lovely run from deep by Adam Morris which was then carried into contact by Matt Hay was recycled well for our new improved centre Dean Stephens to kick through and then outrun the Whitehall Full-back to score. The conversion was kicked.

Nothing else happened in the 1st half except Ben Phillips was then taken off due to injury and was replaced by Dave Vince.

Kingswood 7 - 0 Whitehall

After some words of advice from the coaches Kingswood started to pile the pressure on in the second half. From the off sustained Kingswood pressure saw them camped in the Whitehall half. After some time the inevitable happened and the Big K scored. From a ruck on the 22, with the scrum half part of the ruck, Rob Lamb fed Neil Ward on a crash ball (excellent communication between the forwards there I thought) and quick ball from the ensuing ruck led to Ian Kirley going over in the corner. The conversion was missed. 12 - 0.

Adam Morris then went off for Brad 'Try Time' Whiston to come on.

Kingswood were then guilty of becoming lacksidasical as a tired pass was intercepted by their big No.12 who went over to score depsite Brads best attempts to hold him back. 12 - 5

This seemed to wake Kingswood up who, 3 minutes later, replied with a quick free kick from a penalised scrum which saw Steve Ridgway go through 3 of the Whitehall players to score. The conversion was missed. 17 - 5

Matt Hay was then replaced by Adam Morris due to injury.

Some 'champagne' rugby from Kingswood, with a deft dummy and run by the captain Mark Oakley, saw Ian Kirley once again go over under the posts. He then converted his own try to make it 24 - 5.

15 mintues later Whitehall were tiring when a Big K penalty was simply spread wide for Anthony Davies to soar up the wing he then fed Dave Vince who was in support to score under the posts. The conversion was kicked. 31 - 5.

The final play of the game saw a good Kingswood counter attack taken up field by Dean Stephens, who then fed Ben Lambert who crossed back in field to switch with Ian Kirley who went over in the corner. The conversion was missed.

Final score 36 - 5 to Kingswood.

Thats the end of the season, Kingswood have one final game against a touring side next weekend. All are welcome to play or watch and then join in the merriment after the game in the bar.
