A much closer game that recent weeks, but a win is a win

Well the last game of the season was sadly upon us and Kingswood were staring down the barrel of a near perfect season where "88% of the time, they won every time". However Kingswood had to face one last test and it came from Somerset 1 mid-tablers, Old Sulians. Sulians took to the pitch an hour before kick off to warm up and some of their players even arrived before ours, so it was clear that they were going to take the game seriously.

Kingswood though were also out to win and they certainly didn't want to lose the last game of the season, fortunately they made a great start when with only 4 minutes on the clock, Sean Voisey pounced on a spilt pass before popping it out the Alex Green who then setup Mike Oakley, who went over to grab his 25th try of the season and finish as top try scorer for the 1st team. Dean Stephens converted and the score was 7-0

Sulians were starting to mount a bit of pressure but some great defensive tackles by Ian Kirley kept Sulians away from the Kingswood try line. 10 minutes gone and Sulians were putting together a great passing move but they went one pass to far and the ball was spilt. Spotting the opportunity for a counter attack, Rich Francis kicked the loose ball downfield and gave chase, there was then a spot of comical defending from the Sulians fullback which allowed Rich Francis to regain possession and go over to grab Kingswood's 2nd try. 12-0

8 minutes later and Sulians No. 11 grabbed a well deserved try after a good passing move and some missed tackles by Kingswood. No. 15 converted and the score was a little bit closer at 12-7

Sulians were now having a good spell of pressure and if it wasn't for some great Kingswood defence, the scores could have been a lot closer. However Kingswood fought back and started to regain possession. On the stroke of half time, there was a lovely pickup from Paulo who broke free only to be tackled just short of the Sulians try line, a ruck was formed and Steve Trevelyan picked up the ball and managed to squeeze it over the line to make the score 19-7 at half time.

Half Time: Kingswood 19 - 7 Old Sulians

Kingswood pressurised from the restart and Sulians gave away a string of penalties which allowed Kingswood to get deep into their half. On 48 minutes Paul Allen intercepted a pass and waltzed over the line to give Kingswood a comfortable lead of 24 points to 7.

Sulians then had another spell of good pressure and on 66 minutes they managed to grab another try and a excellent conversion made the score 24-14. Worse was yet to come when Kingswood were caught sleeping just 3 minutes later and No.15 managed to grab another try for Sulians. The Sulians kicker converted to make it 3 out of 3 from the boot and made the score 24-21 to set up a nervous end to the game.

This was enough to shake Kingswood up and they went on the offensive and had great pressure for the last 10 minutes of the game. However Sulians managed to mount one last counter attack and it looked like their winger was going to grab a winning try, however there was an outstanding defensive tackle from Ryan Bernard who's blistering pace was enough to catch the Sulians winger and prevent the try.

The referee then ended the game and Kingswood had managed to hold on to their lead and cap of a brilliant season with a well deserved win. Kingswood then retired to the club house where they celebrated their promotion to Gloucester 2 in style. Congratulations boys!

Until next season folks...
