Kingswood’s class of 2013/14 made history this Saturday by securing the clubs first ever cup final in their 59 year history.
In a match played in horrific weather conditions, Kingswood dominated possession throughout this fixture to claim a 17-0 victory and right a few wrongs from the opening game of the league season.
It was another strong line-up for the home side with Jordan Wood, Paul Ford, Matthew Stone, Dave Tomlin, Alex Green, Roland Gabriel, Josh Smith & Captain Nick Coe nestling down in the pack. For the Backs, Andy Watts, Chris Rhodes, Jake Saunders, Dean Stephens, Rob Ford, Lewis Voisey & Joe Jones-Griffiths. On the bench were Ryan England, Daniel Hawkins and Daniel McLeod.
After Kingswood suffered a disappointing 7-12 opening day league defeat to the visitors, there was more than a cup final place on the minds of the players.
The first half was played in terrible weather conditions, with strong winds and torrential rain. The slippery ball was causing lots of handling errors for Kingswood and a lot of chances went begging. However, Kingswood did manage to find their way across the whitewash twice in the first half, with both tries coming from Flanker, Roland Gabriel.
The 2nd half was a drier affair, but by this point the pitch was already sodden, not making the ball any easier to control. Chris Rhodes kept Chipping Sodbury pinned in their half for most of the game with an excellent kicking display, and yet again, the Kingswood pack turned over numerous ball at scrum time.
Rob Ford grabbed Kingswood a 3rd try halfway through the 2nd period when Kingswood used an overlap well and Ford was only required to throw a dummy pass to find the space and slip through the defence with ease.
It was a comfortable win for Kingswood, who never had their try-line threatened during the game. Man of the match went to Lewis Voisey after an impressive performance on the wing in which he secured every slippery high ball that fell his way and returned with interest.
Kingswood now know that they will face last weeks opponents, Longlevens, in the final, but we await with baited breath as to where it will be played.
Well done boys!
Final Score: Kingswood 17-0 Chipping Sodbury
