Friendly Match
Southmead V Kingswood
Kingswood went away to Gloucester 1 mid-tablers Southmead on Saturday
after the match was changed from a home fixture at the last minute.
The match kicked off on time on a slightly windy Saturday afternoon with
a good crowd looking on.
For the opening 10 minutes of the game, Southmead pretty much stayed in
the Kingswood half, this was primarily down to the fact that some of
Kingswood's kicking and passing was not up to scratch, however,
Kingswood's defence stayed firm and Southmead didn't really have any try
scoring opportunities. On 11 minutes however Kingswood ventured
into Southmead's half and were eventually awarded a penalty when
Southmead dived in over the top of a scrum, unfortunately Ian Kirley was
unable to convert the kick and the scores remained level.
The next 20 minutes were evenly contested with both teams having equal
possession and with neither team really creating any chances. This
was down to the fact though that there was some excellent Kingswood
performances on display. Neil Ward was hitting every ruck and
retaining the ball for Kingswood and Steve Trevelyan had a 'Man Of The
Match' performance by making some great runs that ensured that Kingswood
were not going to roll over and be defeated.
The rest of the half was pretty much of the same standard but Kingswood
got their kicking and passing game together and did start to control the
game towards the end of the half. A strong defensive performance
saw Kingswood go in at half time with the scores level at 0-0.
Half Time: Southmead 0 - 0 Kingswood
Kingswood made a great start to the 2nd half and were
unlucky not to take the lead on two occasions when Damien Crosswell
twice crossed the line, however the referee deemed that both times the
ball was held up so the scores remained the same although Kingswood were
showing good signs that they could take the lead in the match.
Al Green was also putting in an excellent performance
with some impressive strength and agility in the lineout's. On 55
minutes, Al once again leapt and secured the ball from a lineout and
Kingswood drove towards the Southmead try line and Damien Crosswell once
again went over the line. It was third time lucky for Damien and
the try was awarded. The resulting conversion was missed but
Kingswood finally had the lead the deserved. 5-0
The rest of the game was played out like the first
half with Kingswood having great spells of possession and defending well
when it counted. Shaun Voyce who was drafted in from the 2nd XV
also had a 'Man Of The Match' performance with most notably two
outstanding powerful runs and at one point amazingly seemed to teleport
himself to the other side the pitch in a matter of seconds to help with
a Kingswood break. He was later however told off for screaming at
the Southmead fullback!
Southmead were very powerful in the scrums and
did turn over a few Kingswood put-ins and this is where their best
attacking opportunities came from, however, Kingswood held firm and
earned themselves an amazing 5-0 victory.
