Ross On Wye V Kingswood
Kingswood had a long away trip to
Ross On Wye this week which involved an arduous 1 and a half hour
journey on a cramped couch.
They game started at a fast and
furious pace but it did seem that some of Kingswood’s heads were still
on the coach. Kingswood missed an early penalty after Ross were
penalised for a shoulder charge.
Then with just 5 minutes gone on the
clock, Ross put together a passing move and Kingswood were guilty of
some missed tackling and No. 15 managed to worm his way through and go
over and give Ross a 7 point lead.
Ross were nearly in again shortly
after when some bad passing by Kingswood was intercepted by No. 10 and
he sent a kick down field into the Kingswood try area, fortunately Paul
Allen got back well and dived on the ball to give Ross a 5m scrum which
Kingswood defended well.
From then the game became an intense
battle in the middle of the park with both teams generating attacking
moves but with both teams having any real scoring chances.
With two minutes left until half
time, No. 8 was sin-binned for elbowing and Ian Kirley converted the
kick to make the scores 7-3. Kingswood were then awarded another
penalty deep into injury time but Ian Kirley could not convert and the
score remained 7-3 at half time.
Half Time: Ross On Wye 7 - 3 Kingswood
The start
of the 2nd half was much the same as the first, with both
teams having equal possession of the ball, although as time went on,
Ross were beginning to have more and more of the ball. Kingswood were
defending well but were also giving away several penalties which was
keeping them camped in their own 22.
Kingswood’s defence was finally breached on 56 minutes though when No 14
went over from close range. 12-3
Neil Ward
then came on for Alex Green.
On 63
minutes, Ross were penalised for obstruction and Kingswood opted for the
scrum just 5m out. Kingswood secured the ball and drove well. The ball
made it to the back of the maul and it was passed along until Steve
Trevelyan finally got the ball over the line. Dean Stephens was unable
to convert and the score was now 12-8.
The try
lifted Kingswood’s spirits and they pushed hard for another try.
Kingswood turned over a Ross scrum on the halfway line and Dean Stephens
sent a kick down field which bounced into touch just 3m from the Ross
try line, unfortunately Ross managed to clear their lines from the
lineout.
Kingswood
then dominated the next 10 as they pushed to get that winning try but
the Ross defence stood firm, resisting several attacks. Then with
injury time looming, Ross managed a quick breakaway try through No. 7,
this was a real kick in the teeth for Kingswood after being so close to
grabbing the lead. 19-8
Paul
Allen then came off and was replaced by Liam Stinchcombe.
Kingswood
heads dropped and with the final whistle approaching it seemed that they
had accepted defeat, this meant there was time for one more Ross try
with almost a carbon copy of the try before, a break away run and some
missed tackles. 24-8.
The final
whistle blew and a disheartened Kingswood left the field having been
dealt their first defeat of the season. The score line didn’t really
reflect the game as Kingswood almost scored on several occasions in the
final minutes of the game, but almost doesn’t win you points.
