Cup Match
Old Bristolians Vs Kingswood
Kingswood had a break from league action this week but faced a tough
away trip to Gloucester 1 mid-tablers, Old Bristolians. This match
would give Kingswood a good indication of how they would perform in
Gloucester 1 if they were to earn promotion at the end of the season.
The game started off at a frantic pace with hard tackling and good all
round play and it was clear that Kingswood were not there just to make
up the numbers and really took it to Old Bristolians through the
forwards.
It was around 10 minutes that the first scrum of the match was awarded,
indicating that both teams had made an impressive start to the match, it
was Old Bristolians however that got the first put-in. Kingswood
drove hard and turned over the first scrum and eventually went on to
turn over the first six Bristolian scrums.
Despite a slight up hill disadvantage, Kingswood were playing some
awesome rugby and they're defence was holding firm.
Matt Davies, who was carrying a shoulder injury was then replaced by Rob
Lamb.
The first points of the match came just after the half hour mark when
Old Bristolians were awarded a penalty which No. 14 converted 3-0.
3 minutes later and Kingswood pulled level when they awarded a penalty
and Ian Kirley converted 3-3.
Both teams played out the rest of the half in a hard fought battle and
the scores were level at half time, setting up a very interesting 2nd
half.
Half Time: Old Bristolians 3 - 3 Kingswood
With Kingswood now holding the downhill advantage and with their
forwards dominating upfront, Kingswood made an excellent start to the
2nd half with some outstanding rugby on show.
On 55 minutes Kingswood's dominance in the scrums finally paid off when
they were awarded a penalty which Dean Stephens kicked to touch and
Kingswood secured the resulting lineout, but a great chip over the top
of the Bristolians defence was agonisingly knocked on and Bristolians
were awarded a scrum 7m out. Kingswood drove hard however and
turned over the scrum and marched Bristolians into their try area before
Ben Phillips got the ball down. 3-8.
Kingswood had their heads up and were camping out in the Bristolians 22
with some aggressive play. On 66 minutes, Kingswood were awarded a
scrum 5m out and again their drive was outstanding and they marched
Bristolians back into their try area, however Bristolians No. 8 broke
off the back of the scrum, ran round the front and dived on the ball,
Kingswood were awarded a penalty try and No. 8 was given 10 minutes in
the sin-bin. Ian Kirley converted from under the posts and
Kingswood had an surprising but well deserved lead. 3-15.
Neil Ward who had a brilliant game then made way for Ben Feltham.
On 71 minutes Kingswood were awarded another scrum on Old Bristolians 22
and drove down the pitch before Mark McGarrigle picked the ball up from
the back and darted towards the line before diving over giving Kingswood
a 3-20 lead.
Kingswood were awesome up front and in defence and despite being reduced
to 14 men after Dean Stephens came off injured, they added 3 points with
the last kick on the game when Ian Kirley converted a penalty 3-23.
The referee finally brought the game to a end and Kingswood had achieved
an important victory over higher league opposition and it meant that for
the 4th game in a row, Kingswood had conceded no tries and only 9
points.
