Bristol Harlequins 2nd's Vs
Kingswood 'A'
Kingswood's last game of the season
was an away trip to Bristol Harlequins. A fair and
equal lot was drawn before the game and Neil Ward's name
was selected from the hat to play for the opposition.
It only took Kingswood 1 minute to get
onto the score sheet after a Harlequins 22 drop-out was
collected well and the ball recycled for a few phases
before making its way out to Rob Edwards who showed good
pace down the wing before popping the ball inside to
Paul Allen who went over and even converted for the
extra 2 points. 0-7
It was on 13 minutes that the game saw
its next try. Kingswood were pressing well which lead
to a down field clearance by Harlequins. Rob Edwards
was on hand to scoop up the ball and again set off up
the wing on a strong run before being tackled. The ball
was again recycled well and this time it was Dave Vince
who went over. 0-12
There was then more points for
Kingswood as the Harlequins restart ran dead and
Kingswood secured a scrum on the half way line. Paul
Allen ran a lovely line and received the ball and broke
through the Harlequins line to run the remainder of the
pitch unchallenged. 0-17
Harlequins then got into the game and
put Kingswood under some sustained pressure and it
looked as though they were going to score at any minute
but fortunately for Kingswood Dan Nicholls done well in
ripping the ball from the advancing Harlequins rolling
maul and it was eventually cleared downfield. Mark
McGarrigle done well in reaching the bouncing ball first
and set off downfield before passing to Damien Crosswell
who powered through the Harlequins defender and got the
ball down over the line. 0-22
Kingswood then went off the boil for
the next 13 minutes and were camped out in their own 22
for the duration, but they were solid in defence and
prevented any Harlequins tries. On the 32 minute mark
Harlequins were awarded a lineout 10 metres for
Kingswood's tryline but Mark McGarrigle done well to
clear the spilt ball. The ball fell in the hands of the
Harlequins full-back who then made some ground before
sending a kick into Kingswood's half. The ball was
caught well by Paul Allen who spread it wide to Rob
Edwards who finally grabbed a try after breaking up the
wing and running over the Harlequins whitewash. 0-27
Harlequins kept attacking Kingswood
though and on 36 minutes finally made the breakthrough
and it was Kingswood's own Neil Ward that assisted the
try. Harlequins were rucking well and making good
ground before the ball was sent blind to Neil Ward who
fed Harlequins No. 1 who in turn crashed over in the
corner. 7-27
Half Time: Bristol Harlequins
2nd's 7 - 27 Kingswood 'A'
Kingswood were placed under pressure
from the restart and Harlequins tried a cheeky little
kick through but it was excellently blocked by Derek
James' face. James scooped up the ball and unselfishly
passed it inside to a fitter Mike Oakley who was left
with the arduous task of running the "80 yards"
unassisted to grab his first try of the match. 7-34
On 49 minutes Kingswood grabbed
another try through a nice move with some excellent ball
retention that saw Mike Oakley send a miss pass out to
Rob Edwards who slipped through to grab his 2nd try.
7-39
2 minutes later and Kingswood had a
scrum in their own half which was secured and the ball
sent to the backs, Paul Allen set off on a lovely
weaving run and slalomed his way through several players
to run the ball in over the line and secure his
hat-trick. 7-44
4 minutes later and Harlequins were
awarded a scrum but Kingswood managed to turn the ball
over, Mark McGarrigle quickly picked the ball up and
made a great break before passing to Rob Edwards who ran
the rest of the way to also secure his 3rd try of the
game. 7-49
On 63 minutes, Kingswood had a scrum 5
metres from the Harlequins try line and the ball was
secured and sent to the backs and Paul Allen once again
slipped through the Harlequins line with a nice sidestep
to grab his 4th try of the game. 7-56
On 70 minutes, Kingswood had a scrum
in the Harlequins half and this time there was some
excellent work through the forwards who rucked, recycled
and hit the Harlequins defence again and again before
Mike Oakley found a gap and slipped through it to grab
his 2nd try and Kingswood's 11th. 7-61
It was Harlequins who had the last say
in the game however when they were awarded a scrum on 73
minutes from which Kingswood were caught knapping as No.
12 broke through and looked as though he was going to
score but he was excellently tackled just short of the
try line. However Harlequins got to the ruck quickly
and No. 15 received the ball out wide to go over in the
corner. 12-61
The final whistled sounded soon after
and Kingswood had ended their season with a win and now
look forward to a nice relaxing break, before the
pre-season training begins!
Until next season folks...
