League Match

Kingswood v Cotham Park

Kingswood hosted Cotham Park for their first home game of the new season.  Kingswood were out for revenge after Cotham held them to a 17 all draw last season, but things did not get of to a good start when Cotham took the lead in the first 5 minutes when a kick downfield landed in the Kingswood try area, Paul Allen tried to clear the ball but the kick was charged down and No. 2 dropped on the ball, No. 13 converted and Cotham had an early 0-7 lead.

Kingswood then went on the offensive and 4 minutes later managed to pull a try back when Ben Phillips pounced on Cotham's scrum half forcing the error off the back of a Cotham scrum, the ball was spilt and Dean Stephens secured the loose ball.  Kingswood drove forward and eventually Steve Trevelyan dropped over the line.  5-7.

The next 20 minutes was a close game with several chances for both sides but Kingswood's play was a little sloppy and chances were wasted.  However, on the half hour mark, Cotham Park had a scrum 7m out from their own try line.  Kingswood pushed hard and drove the scrum back into Cotham's try area before Ben Phillips dived on the ball when it came out of the back of the scrum to score Kingswood's 2nd try. 10-7.

5 minutes later and Kingswood were still pressing hard and from the back of a rolling maul the ball found it's way out to John Bogan who cut back inside and went on a darting run and made some good ground before being tackled, Kingswood secured the ball in the ruck and Steve Trevelyan picked up the ball and crossed the line to grab his 2nd try of the game and Kingswood's 3rd. Dean Stephens converted and Kingswood were looking more comfortable with a 17-7 score line.

On 36 minutes, Cotham found themselves in Kingswood half and were passing the ball well, Paul Allen then asked a Cotham player to pass the ball to him, which he did, however the referee deemed this to be 'Bad Sportsmanship' and Cotham were awarded the penalty but the kicked at posts was unsuccessful.

Then in injury time at the end of the first half, Cotham's No. 10 was sin-binned for deliberate foul play for not retreating 10m and holding Steve Trevelyan as he tried to break through

Half Time: Kingswood 17 - 7 Cotham Park

It was clear from the restart that Kingswood planned to make the extra man count when Mike Oakley went on a strong run which put Kingswood deep into Cotham's half, a ruck was formed and Kingswood recycled the ball quickly before getting the ball out to Dean Stephens who sent a kick over the Cotham defence and into their try area.  The Cotham full back tried to drop down on the ball but narrowly missed it, with the ball just sitting there, a full paced Paul Allen flung himself over the top of the Cotham fullback and scored Kingswood's 4th try with only a minute gone of the 2nd half. 22-7.

Then 3 minutes later, Alex Green caught an aerial ball and went on a great run which led to Kingswood putting on an amazing display of quick hands and fast play which resulted in a try for Dean Stephens. 27-7.

After the restart there was much of the same when Kingswood put on another outstanding passing move which involved far too many people to mention, the quick hands and brilliant support play made it look like Cotham Park were standing still and Dave Vince ran the last couple of metres to grab another try for Kingswood. 32-7

Unbelievably, with only another 2 minutes gone, Kingswood scored another try and were really playing out of their skins.  Mark McGarrigle ran through the Cotham defence before passing the ball which, after some more quick hands, found it's way out to Dean Stephens who had an easy run in.  Ian Kirley converted and Kingswood ended an incredible 7 minutes with 4 tries and a 39-7 lead.

Cotham then had another player sin-binned but this did not have the same effect and in fact Cotham had a good 10 minute spell of pressure, where they were awarded penalty after penalty which kept Kingswood pinned back in their on half.  Kingswood's defence was incredibly strong though and survived the scare without conceding any points.

Kingswood then got control of the game and started to put some good passing moved together once again.  On 68 minutes another flowing moved seemed to have set John Bogan up with an easy try under the posts but Cotham's No. 3 deliberately tripped him, a penalty try was awarded and No. 3 was sent off.  Ben Phillips converted and the score was now 46-7.

A minute later and Ian Kirley grabbed his first try of the season and Kingswood's 9th after yet another flowing passing move by Kingswood.  Ben Phillips once again converted and the score was now a convincing 53 points to 7.

Kingswood played out the rest of the game in complete control and secured their 3rd win in 3 league games, putting them in 1st place.
