Cup Match
Kingswood Vs Broad Plain
Another break from league action this week with a Quarter Final cup
match against Somerset One mid-tablers, Broad Plain. Kingswood did
not know what to expect from their opposition, but with the home
advantage, Kingswood seemed quietly confident that they could make it
through to the Semi-Finals. The game was played in terrible
weather conditions so it was vital that Kingswood kept the ball in their
hands if they were to get some points on the board.
Kingswood started the stronger team and were rucking and mauling hard and
it seemed as though Broad Plain were unable to compete in the scrums
with Kingswood taking a few against the head in the opening few minutes.
On 11 minutes Kingswood were awarded a penalty for Broad Plain coming in
at the side but Ben Phillips was unable to convert and the scored
remained 0-0.
However, two minutes later Kingswood grabbed the first try of the game
when Broad Plain knocked on and Kingswood were awarded a scrum 20m out.
A strong scrum was won by Kingswood and Scrum Half Ben Phillips released
the ball to Dean Stephens who ran forward and dinked a ball over the top
of the Broad Plain defence before chasing the kick, the ball bounced
into the Broad Plain try area and an attempted touch from the Broad
Plain centre was missed and Dean Stephens dropped on the ball to score
Kingswood's first points of the game. Ben Phillips added two
points from the conversion. 7-0
4 minutes later and Kingswood doubled their lead when Broad Plain were
awarded a lineout in their own 22, which they secured, however when the
ball made it to the backs, Kingswood's forwards pounced to force an
error and Stan Bailey was on hand to scoop up the loose ball before
passing to Mike Oakley who dived over the line for Kingswood's 2nd try.
Again Ben Phillips added a conversion. 14-0
Kingswood's pack were dominating upfront and on 26 minutes Kingswood
secured a lineout in Broad Plain's 22 and set up an powerful rolling
maul which marched with ease to the tryline before Damien Crosswell
broke free and dropped over the line. 19-0
Half Time: Kingswood 19 - 0 Broad Plain
With the rain still pouring, Kingswood set out to keep control in the
second half and earn their place in the Semi-Final of the cup and it
only took 1 minute of the second half to capitalise on their first half
lead. Broad Plain had possession in the backs and were passing the
ball well but with the rain pouring down and with the backs under
pressure from Kingswood's defence, an error was forced and Kingswood
took possession of the ball and some quick hands ended with Mark
McGarrigle running unchallenged over the whitewash. 24-0
An injured Mike Oakley was then replaced by his brother Mark Oakley.
On 46 minutes Kingswood were in full flow and were awarded a penalty
when Broad Plain were caught offside. Dean Stephens kicked to
touch and Kingswood secured the resulting lineout and set up another
rolling maul and like a repeat of his try in the first half, Damien
Crosswell broke from the back and had a comfortable run in.
29-0
Kingswood continued to rally and on 58 minutes Broad Plain were awarded
a penalty which they decided to tap and start a passing move but again
Kingswood's forwards forced and error which Stan Bailey again picked up
before sending a beautiful kick through the Broad Plain defence and an
excellent turn of pace from Liam Stinchcombe saw him get to the bouncing
ball first and he dropped on the ball to grab Kingswood's 6 try of the
game. 34-0
With only two minutes gone after Kingswood's last try, they went on the
offensive once again and despite the weather, Kingswood put together a
lovely passing move together with some great supporting play which
allowed the ball to remain in the hands and away from the boggy pitch
which had now churned up so much that both teams shirts were caked in
mud. The ball finally made its way out to Rich Francis who had no
option but to kick and chase through the Broad Plain defence with Full
Back Matt Bryant in support. Both Bryant and Francis made it to
the ball before the Broad Plain defence and a lovely hand off from Rich
Francis on Matt Bryant saw him drop on the ball to unselfishly grab
himself his first try of the game. 39-0
The weather and the state of the pitch was now taking its toll on the
game and the ball remained bogged down in the centre for the next
quarter of an hour and it seemed like it had finally put an end to
Kingswood's scoring streak, that was until on the 75 minutes when
Kingswood secured a lineout and yet again a powerful rolling maul
marched towards the Broad Plain tryline and it was coolly finished off
with Matt Davies who broke from the back to dive over the line. 44-0
The final whistle went and Kingswood had secured a comfortable passage
into the Semi-Final of the cup with an impressive and professional win.
