League Match

BAC V Kingswood

Kingswood's second league fixture of the new campaign was another away trip, this time to Bristol Aeroplane Company.   BAC were looking for their first win in the league whilst Kingswood were looking to gain a second victory after their opening match win against Tredworth.

Kingswood started the stronger of the two teams and were very unlucky not to get a try early on, however BAC's defence kept Kingswood at bay.  Sam Massey chased a kick down field and forced an error from the BAC fullback but the resulting scrum 5m out came to nothing.

With Kingswood controlling the game well, BAC sent a long kick over the top which Rich Francis & BAC's No. 6 chased.  There seemed to be a push on Rich Francis which sent him tumbling but the referee allowed play to continue and No. 6 secured the loose ball and scored a try against the run of play.  No. 10 converted and Kingswood found themselves 7 points down.

BAC then had a penalty 9 minutes later but No. 10 was unable to convert.  This close call seemed to wake Kingswood up and they suddenly hit a purple patch.  With 29 minutes gone, Kingswood had a penalty which was kicked to touch, there then was an excellently worked lineout which caught BAC off guard and Mike Oakley powered over the line to grab Kingswood's first try of the game. 7-5

3 minutes later and Ian Kirley caught an up field kick by BAC and went on a long run, there then was a lovely passing move which ended with Mark McGarrigle skipping past a challenge and grabbing his 2nd try in as many weeks. Dean Stephens converted and gave Kingswood a 7-12 point lead.

Then with only another 2 minutes played, Matthew Perriman went on a strong run and another passing move developed.  Rich Francis received the ball before selling an outrageous dummy to the BAC full back and crashing over to give Kingswood their 3rd try in a remarkable 5 minutes. 7-17

Half Time: BAC 7 - 17 Kingswood

As in the previous match with Smith's, Kingswood were caught napping at the start of the second half and conceded a try with only 3 minutes of the second half gone.  In fairness to Kingswood there was a obvious knock-on which the referee failed to spot and BAC's No. 13 had an easy run in to grab their 2nd try of the game and which gave the game a much closer score line of 14-17.

There was then an excellent defensive tackle by Mark McGarrigle as BAC once again broke free, unfortunately the referee deemed that it was a high tackle (even though the BAC player congratulated McGarrigle on the challenge) and BAC were awarded the penalty, fortunately the penalty came to nothing.

James Dicks then came on for Mike Oakley who was injured in a challenge.  BAC then started to control the game but Kingswood's defence held firm.  Matthew Davies was then replaced by Steve Trevelyan.

With 53 minutes gone, BAC were awarded a penalty which No. 10 converted and the game was tied at 17 all but there was still plenty of time for that to change, however it wasn't clear in which direction the game was going to go.  Kingswood then made another substitution when Sam Massey was replaced Paul Allen.

Kingswood started to regain control but some silly mistakes were creeping into their game and this was letting BAC back in with a chance of stealing the game.  This was the case when on 71 minutes, Kingswood gave away another penalty and No. 10 stepped up and converted and handed BAC the lead with only 9 minutes left on the clock.  Then with 5 minutes remaining, Kingswood were awarded a penalty which would have drawn the game level, however the decision was made to kick to touch rather than take the 3 points, would Kingswood live to regret that decision?

Then, with 2 minutes left on the clock, Stan Bailey took a quick tap penalty and Kingswood went on the offensive looking for the win, a ruck was formed and the ball was recycled quickly and the ball made it's way out to Dean Stephens who the send a long pass over the top of Rich Francis' head out to Paul Allen, Rich Francis then looped around the back of Paul Allen and took a pass off of him which drew the winger in before sending a pass out to John Bogan who slipped over the line in the far corner and grabbed Kingswood's fourth try of the match.  Dean Stephens was unable to convert, but as there was no time left on the clock, a frantic and exciting game came to an end and Kingswood secured their second league win of the season.
